Avista to implement Public Safety Power Shutoffs in select areas amid elevated fire risk

August 1, 2026

Customers in select areas will experience planned power outages today.

SPOKANE, Wash., August 1, 2026 — Due to forecast high-fire-risk weather conditions, including a Red Flag Warning, Avista plans to turn off power in select areas beginning around 1 p.m. Saturday, August 1. Public Safety Power Shutoffs, or PSPS, are intended to reduce wildfire risk and protect customers and communities.

Avista understands that being without power is difficult and does not make this decision lightly.  Before implementing a PSPS, Avista considers several factors, including fire risk, humidity, wind speed and direction, and rainfall during the past 30 to 90 days. Public safety guides every operational decision.

Customers affected by this proactive public safety measure will receive direct communication from Avista.

Avista has moved select areas to an active Public Safety Power Shutoff, including parts of north Spokane and the Indian Trail/Five Mile area, the Nine Mile Falls area, Mead, the South Hill, the Ford/Tumtum area, West Clarkston/Dry Creek and the Kamiah area at 1 p.m. today.

Power will remain off until weather conditions improve, and it is safe for crews to inspect affected power lines and equipment before restoring service. Depending on weather conditions, patrol findings and any necessary repairs, outages may last more than 24 hours.

As soon as conditions allow, Avista crews will patrol power lines and equipment and restore service as quickly and safely as possible. Crews may use drones to patrol utility infrastructure, including hard-to-reach areas. Customers may see drones operating near power lines and equipment during the outage and restoration process. If crews find no damage, restoration can move forward after patrols are complete. If repairs are needed, crews will make them before restoring power.

For the latest outage information, a map of impacted locations, and estimated restoration times, visit Avista’s outage map at myavista.com/outage. Avista will post updates throughout the event. Restoration times may change based on weather, system conditions, patrol findings and needed repairs. Customers can update their contact information at myavista.com/profile or by calling 800-227-9187.
