Work scheduled to begin on Post Street Bridge Crane Replacement Project

March 11, 2025

Section of Post Street expected to be closed to vehicle traffic March 24, 2025 – April 7,2025

SPOKANE, Wash. – March 11, 2025: Starting Monday, March 17, work will begin on the replacement of the crane within Avista’s Post Street Substation. Spokane Falls Blvd to the Post Street Bridge will be closed to all public vehicle traffic from Monday, March 24th through Monday, April 7th. Foot traffic around the substation will be redirected to the Centennial Trail on the south end of the bridge. The Post Street sidewalk will remain open to foot traffic as will Mobius, City Hall, the gondola, and the Numerica Skate Ribbon.

The Post Street Bridge Crane Replacement project aims to replace a crane that is over 115 years old with a modern equivalent. The construction area will be fenced off through the life of the project. Although the project may garner interest from those passing by, Avista requests that everyone stays clear of the area to ensure the safety of employees and the general public.

Overlooking the Spokane River and the Post Street Bridge, The Post Street Substation receives power generated from Monroe Street and Upper Falls Hydroelectric Dams and distributes it safely throughout downtown Spokane and Avista’s power network.

The Post Street Substation originally housed electric trolleys that serviced Spokane and the surrounding area in the early 1900’s. When trolleys went by the wayside making way for the automobile, the Post Street building was repurposed for use as a substation for the downtown area. Within the walls of this historic building is a 35-ton crane that was originally used to handle the trolleys. Since then, it has been used in support of the oversized electrical equipment housed in the substation. Like many other pieces of equipment that are over 115 years old, this crane has reached the end of its serviceable life.
