October 29, 2024

SPOKANE, Wash. Oct. 29, 2024: This morning at approximately 9:15 a.m., Avista was alerted to an incident involving a crane failure from an Avista contractor on the Post Falls North Channel Dam Spillway. Upon making the site safe, an immediate inspection was performed by operators and dam safety engineers.

There is no immediate threat to the dam spillway gates or concrete structure, and Avista remains in control of all flows. Falls Park and the Landing have been closed by local law enforcement at this time. Avista is working with the contractor to assess the safe removal of the crane.

The Post Falls North Channel Dam is undergoing a multi-year rehabilitation project. The work will include rehabilitation of the dam’s concrete structure, replacement of its steel spillway gates and gate hoists, and upgrades to the electrical and control systems.
